The Raffles English StudioThe Integrated Programme is a six-year pathway to the GCE A-Level, the International Baccalaureate Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma, without students sitting the O-Level examination in Secondary 4.
There is no single national IP English syllabus that every school follows identically — IP schools have room to design their own curricula, so what is tested at one school differs in format and emphasis from another. What is consistent across IP English & Language Arts programmes is the demand: students are expected to engage critically with literary and non-literary texts, language, media, ideas and differing perspectives; to communicate for varied audiences and purposes; to investigate important human and social questions; and to become increasingly independent thinkers.
At The Raffles English Studio, students are coached to notice, infer, question, interpret, argue, substantiate, revise and communicate. The goal is stronger school performance now, and the intellectual independence IP students need for Years 5–6 — General Paper, Literature or IB Language and Literature.
Who this programme is for
This programme is built for capable IP students who are discovering that being good at English in primary school is no longer enough.
A student may read fluently but struggle to explain how a writer creates an effect. Another may have intelligent ideas but produce essays that are descriptive, repetitive or poorly substantiated. Some understand a text in discussion, yet cannot translate that understanding into a precise analytical paragraph. Others write elegantly but avoid the harder work of evaluating assumptions, considering alternative interpretations or constructing sustained arguments.

How we teach IP English & Language Arts
Our coaching model starts with diagnosis, followed by explicit strategy teaching, modelling, guided practice, reflection and feedback — not simply assigning more writing.
Metacognitive instruction sits at the centre of this: teaching students how to think about their own thinking, so they can plan, monitor and evaluate their own learning rather than remaining dependent on a teacher. The aim is not merely to improve the next assignment — it is to develop a student who increasingly knows how to improve his or her own work.
What the programme covers, year by year
Different IP schools organise English and Language Arts differently. Set texts, internal assessment formats and school marking schemes vary, and many school-internal details simply are not publicly available. The Studio therefore teaches a strong common intellectual core and adapts practice to each student's actual school requirements.
Foundation IP Language Arts
The foundation years establish the habits students will need later. Students move from “I understand the story” to “I can show how the text creates meaning, support an interpretation and express my thinking precisely.”

Advanced IP Language Arts
Upper IP work raises both the difficulty of the text and the independence expected of the student. Interpretation becomes more nuanced, arguments grow longer and more qualified, and students must make defensible judgements without heavily scaffolded questions.

Who teaches
Carolyne Seah is Head Coach at The Raffles English Studio. She is a Raffles Girls' School alumna, holds an M.Sc as a Sloan Fellow of London Business School, and is a Gallup-certified CliftonStrengths Coach. She coaches students in IP English & Language Arts, GCE O-Level English and A-Level General Paper, as well as adults in executive communication. The Studio operates from Buona Vista and Punggol Digital District.
Her approach combines rigorous English instruction with individual diagnosis: students are taught to recognise how they think, where their reasoning or expression breaks down, and how to improve the next response. Frequently asked questions about IP English tuition in Singapore
What exactly is IP English or Language Arts?
There is no single identical IP English syllabus used by every school. The Integrated Programme gives schools room to develop specialised curricula, and schools organise English, Literature and Language Arts differently. Public curricula nevertheless share important emphases: critical reading, sophisticated writing, literary and non-literary analysis, communication, inquiry and independent thinking.
How is IP English tuition different from O-Level English tuition?
O-Level and Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate examination tuition is naturally organised around a common national examination syllabus. IP students do not sit the O-Level examination at the end of Secondary 4, and their schools have greater scope to design school-based curricula and assessments. IP coaching therefore needs to build transferable intellectual skills alongside preparation for the student's actual school tasks.
Which IP levels and years do you teach?
The programme covers IP Years 1–4 (Secondary 1–4), with a Foundation pathway for Years 1–2 and an Advanced pathway for Years 3–4. Difficulty, independence and sophistication increase progressively rather than treating all four years as one undifferentiated level.
How long is the IP English coaching programme?
The full curriculum is designed around approximately 40 weekly two-hour lessons across the academic year, organised into progressive terms. Students joining during the year can be diagnosed and placed at an appropriate point rather than being expected to repeat material they have already mastered.
What happens during a typical two-hour IP English lesson?
A typical lesson combines retrieval of earlier learning, explicit teacher modelling, close reading or discussion of a text, guided practice, independent application and feedback. Writing is taught through modelling, practice and reflection rather than assigning essays without teaching the decision-making behind them.
Is the programme tied to one IP school's syllabus?
No. That would be misleading because IP schools differ. Students learn the transferable core of close reading, literary analysis, argument, writing, rhetoric, communication and critical thinking. School texts, recent assignments and teacher feedback are used to identify school-specific needs.
What class sizes do you offer for IP English tuition?
1:1 coaching and small-group classes of up to 3 students. We keep IP groups small — textual discussion, oral reasoning and detailed writing feedback become difficult to deliver well in larger classes.
How do you assess a new IP English student?
Where possible, students bring recent marked work. The starting question is not simply the grade, but why marks were lost: reading accuracy, inference, evidence selection, analysis, argument, organisation, sentence control, language accuracy or failure to answer the precise task. The diagnosis then determines the first coaching priorities.
Will my child receive homework?
Yes, but practice is targeted rather than excessive. Students may complete annotation, paragraph rewriting, reading, vocabulary, unseen analysis or longer writing depending on the current learning goal. Ten repetitions of the same error are not useful practice.
How is progress measured?
Progress is tracked through writing portfolios, recurring-error logs, rubric criteria, student reflection, school results and comparison of earlier and later work — tracking not only grades but behaviours such as independent analysis, evidence selection, intelligent revision and reasoned judgement between interpretations.
Do parents receive progress updates?
We provide a short progress update at the end of each term, supplemented by contact where a significant development emerges. Updates identify strengths, current limiting habits and the next one or two priorities rather than overwhelming parents with scores.
Do you offer online IP English tuition, or only in-person?
In-person coaching is available at the Studio's Buona Vista and Punggol Digital District locations. Online lessons are also available.
Are lesson materials included?
Students receive Studio curriculum materials required for lessons. Where a school set text is being discussed, families may need to supply the student's own authorised copy.
Do you offer a trial IP English lesson?

How much does IP English tuition cost in Singapore?
